26/11

Life in Combat and Leading in the VUCA World

An amazing talk explaining the difficulties and challenges of leading in a war-like situation, using the infamous 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks as an example to demonstrate how the dynamics of the game keep changing every split second.

An engaging and fascinating narration of how incredible the Indian Army, and it’s special forces are, using the 26/11 Terror Attacks as an example to explain the nuances.

VUCA – volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity is derived from military vocabulary.

  • V = Volatility. The nature and dynamics of change, and the nature and speed of change forces and change catalysts.
  • U = Uncertainty. The lack of predictability, the prospects for surprise, and the sense of awareness and understanding of issues and events.
  • C = Complexity. The multiplex of forces, the confounding of issues and the chaos and confusion that surround an organization.
  • A = Ambiguity. The haziness of reality, the potential for misreads, and the mixed meanings of conditions; cause-and-effect confusion.

26/11 was one of the most ghastly terror attacks ever attempted on Earth, not simply because of the number of casualties, psychological damage, and associated trauma, but BECAUSE it wasn’t another bomb blast – the traditional way in which terrorists spread fear, panic and horror.

The sheer audacity of the operation – sending in 10 heavily armed assailants to carry out a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across a city, and “kill as many people they could” was unheard of, at-least in modern history.

The attacks, which drew widespread global condemnation, began on Wednesday, 26 November and lasted until Saturday, 29 November 2008, killing 164 people and wounding at least 308.

This powerful talk by Mr. Raman gives an account of how the NSG personnel and the security forces accomplished something which had never been done before, and explains the complexities of the operation – including why it took over 3 days to officially confirm the Mumbai siege had ended.

Because Bugs are a real DRAAAGGG …

NASA is looking everywhere for ways to improve aviation fuel efficiency. Two of its most promising projects — a bug-repellant coating and a new technology for smaller vertical tails — are now ready to be tested.

When it comes to commercial aviation, even the smallest improvements in fuel efficiency mean millions of dollars saved and fewer harmful emissions in our atmosphere.

That’s how we reduce the …. DRAAAGGG…

Scientists estimate that using bug-repellant coating on aircrafts can help increase fuel efficiency by upto 6% (on every single trip).

Now that’s something BIG, isn’t it? Let’s hope that the test results come out to be positive (for the sake of humankind and our sustainability).

GOOgle or CO2-gle

One Google search produces about 0.2 g of CO2.

But since you hardly get an answer from one search, a typical search session produces about the same amount of CO2 as does boiling a tea kettle.

Google handles about 1 billion search queries per day, which amounts to some 200 tons of CO2 per day.

Algorithm meets Entertainment

Bing and Microsoft Research teamed up to create a constantly updated Oscar predictions list, which eventually came out pretty accurate.

Microsoft sees this as a chance to prove it’s ability to analyse and manipulate data.

Of the top 24 categories at this year’s Oscars, Microsoft’s Bing correctly predicted 20 winners for an 83 percent accuracy score, including all of the most prestigious Academy Award picks.

“I’m Sorry,” Says The Man Who Invented Pop-Up Ads

Pop-Up ads can be really irritating.
Concentrate on doing a task, be it reading, surfing, or playing games, and out of no where….. An ad pops up – disrupting both our concentration as well as the continuity of the task.

Pop Up Ads

The man who invented pop up ads didn’t realize that his ‘new and innovative’ idea to showcase ads and messages would one day annoy millions of people across the globe, at any given instant.

Well, I’m not sure whether his ‘invention’ is so ‘annoying’ that he actually needs to apologize to us folks….. but the person did actually say SORRY !!

A Habitat Placed in a Pit – That’s What NASA Thinks

NASA thinks the moon’s underground caves could house astronauts!

Along with craters covering a huge land mass of our moon, it also has a few….err….pretty deep holes.

The moon’s more than 200 holes, or “lunar pits,” were discovered by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Scientists and Researchers are at present trying to check the feasibility of such an act. The habitat, placed in a pit (or hole) of sorts would provide a safe location, as many scientists claim.

However, a lunar probe will have to verify it before any substantive proceedings can be made in this direction.

Best hot air balloon rides

Want to see how beautiful our world looks from above?

Since childhood,  I always had the above mentioned desire. More so, that was the only reason why I wished to become a pilot (at one point of time 😛 ).

Well, for those (like me) who don’t have a flying license just yet, but would simply cherish a bird’s eye view, hot air balloons provide one of the best ways to accomplish this.

Hot air balloon rides

We can enjoy awesome aerial views of breathtakingly beautiful sceneries by taking a ride on a hot air balloon,  which gives one enough time to enjoy the aesthetically pleasing scenes in peace, which is not always possible on a jet.
Plus, at times, they’re allowed at places, where jet planes or helicopters are often not allowed to fly.

Here’s a list of the best hot air balloon rides which one can experience –
